October & November — The Golden Season

Our busiest and most popular months for a reason. Temperatures are ideal — warm enough for short sleeves during the day, cool and crisp at night. The light is extraordinary for photography, particularly at the Erg Chebbi dunes. The date harvest is also in full swing in the Draa Valley. Book 4–6 weeks in advance as bivouac spots fill quickly.

February & March — Second Peak Season

The most photogenic time for the Atlas mountain crossings (snowcapped peaks visible above the desert). Temperatures are comfortable, wildflowers appear in the valleys, and crowds are thinner than October. The Marrakech Marathon (February) sometimes fills the riad, so book accommodation early. Our favourite time of year for desert circuits.

December & January — Peaceful & Cold

The quietest month in the desert — fewer tourists, negotiable prices, and a raw, atmospheric beauty to the landscape. Nights are genuinely cold (near freezing at altitude) so warm layers are essential. We provide extra blankets at the bivouac. Daytime temperatures remain pleasant at 18–24°C. An excellent choice for travellers who dislike crowds.

April — Spring Colours in the Valleys

The Draa Valley and Dades Gorge are at their most verdant. Temperatures are rising but still manageable. Occasional spring sandstorms (chergui) are possible — they are dramatic but short-lived. April is an underrated month that combines the best of the shoulder season with spring scenery.

May, June & September — Hot but Possible

The heat is significant (30–38°C by day), but manageable if you structure your day correctly: drive early morning, rest at the riad midday, explore late afternoon. September benefits from post-summer emptiness. These months suit travellers with flexible schedules who prefer quieter itineraries and lower prices.

July & August — Our Honest Advice

We will always organise a circuit in July or August if you request it, but we advise against it. Daytime temperatures regularly hit 45–48°C at Merzouga. Camel rides are moved to after sunset. The bivouac becomes uncomfortable. If summer is your only window, consider the Zagora circuit (shorter driving time) or prioritise the High Atlas and cooler mountain regions instead.

Frequently Asked Questions — Best Season

What is the best month to visit the Sahara in Morocco?

October, November, February and March are the best months — ideal temperatures, beautiful light, and the full Sahara experience. If you want fewer tourists, January and April are excellent alternatives.

Can you visit the desert in winter?

Yes — December and January are excellent months for the desert. Nights are cold (near 0°C at altitude) but daytime is pleasant. The low season means fewer tourists and a more intimate experience. Extra blankets are provided at the bivouac.

Is it too hot for a desert circuit in summer?

July and August regularly reach 45°C at Merzouga. We do not recommend these months unless you have no other option. May, June and September are hot but manageable with early morning activities and midday rest.

When do I need to book in advance for a desert circuit?

For October–November and February–March, book 4–6 weeks ahead — bivouac spots and riad rooms fill quickly. For other months, 1–2 weeks is usually sufficient. Contact Eric on WhatsApp for real-time availability.

Does it snow in the Moroccan desert?

Snowfall on the dunes is extremely rare and lasts only hours. However, the High Atlas passes you cross on the way to the desert (Tizi n'Tichka, 2,260m) can have snow from December to February — sometimes requiring chains or alternative routes. Our drivers always monitor conditions.
