How to Prepare for a Sahara Desert Circuit from Marrakech

What to Pack for a Desert Circuit

Clothing — think layers: Days in the desert can reach 25–36°C (October to April), but nights drop to 5–10°C. Pack a warm fleece or jacket, a windproof layer, a scarf (protection against sand and sun), a hat, and sunglasses. For footwear: closed walking shoes for gorge hikes, and sandals for the bivouac.

Essential accessories: a head torch (vital at the bivouac after dark), high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, a fully charged power bank, a camera, and a small daypack for excursions.

What the bivouac provides: nomadic tents with real beds, warm blankets, pillows, complete meals (tagine, couscous, mint tea), and basic sanitation. You do not need a sleeping bag.

Cash: bring small notes in Moroccan dirhams for tips and souvenirs. Card payment is not available in the desert.

Health & Safety in the Desert

Hydration: drink at least 2 litres of water per day. Bottled water is provided throughout the trip. The dry desert air means you dehydrate faster than you realise — don't wait until you feel thirsty.

Sun protection: sand amplifies UV reflection significantly. SPF 50 sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are non-negotiable, even in winter months. Cover up during the hottest midday hours.

Safety: our circuits use professional driver-guides with years of experience on desert tracks. Southern Morocco is a safe and welcoming region. For the most remote itineraries, we provide a satellite phone as a precaution.

Medical conditions: please inform us before booking. Most circuits are suitable for everyone, but long drives on unpaved tracks can be bumpy — we adapt itineraries when needed. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended.

Minibus or Private 4×4?

An air-conditioned minibus is the most economical option and works well for groups of 8 to 15 people. A private Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 gives you more flexibility — stop whenever you want, take detours, and access remote Saharan tracks that minibuses cannot reach, including the spectacular Djebel Saghro crossing. For couples or small groups seeking a more adventurous, personalised experience, the 4×4 is worth the upgrade.

Booking in Advance — Our Recommendations

For the peak seasons (October–November and February–March), we recommend booking at least 3–4 weeks in advance. The best bivouac spots fill quickly. Eric personally handles every booking via WhatsApp — no anonymous tour operator, no middleman. You deal directly with someone who has been organising these circuits for over a decade and knows every driver, guide, and bivouac in the region.

The riad serves as your comfortable base in Marrakech before and after the circuit: hammam, rooftop jacuzzi, and a traditional Moroccan dinner on your return. It makes the whole journey seamless.

Frequently Asked Questions — Desert Circuit

How far in advance should I book a desert circuit from Marrakech?

We recommend booking 3–4 weeks ahead for peak season (October–March). For summer departures, 1–2 weeks is usually sufficient. Contact Eric directly on WhatsApp (+212 600 608 608) for real-time availability.

Is the desert bivouac comfortable?

Yes. Our luxury bivouac includes proper beds (not sleeping bags on sand), warm blankets, hot showers, and a full traditional dinner under the stars. Think glamping, not camping. You need only bring personal toiletries.

What is the best vehicle for a desert circuit?

Minibuses suit groups of 8–15 and keep costs lower. Private 4×4 Land Cruisers are ideal for couples or small groups wanting flexibility and access to remote tracks. Both options include professional, experienced drivers.

Do I need travel insurance for a desert circuit?

Strongly recommended. Choose a policy that covers medical evacuation — desert areas are remote. Eric can provide guidance on suitable policies if needed.

Is southern Morocco safe for tourists?

Yes. The Merzouga and Zagora regions have an excellent safety record. Our guides are local professionals who have worked the same routes for years. The Moroccan south is one of the safest destinations in North Africa.
