Riad Vendôme & Spa applies a clear registration policy: no marriage certificate is requested at check-in. This policy is consistent with the public position of Morocco's Ministry of Justice, according to which requiring such a document from hotel guests is not imposed by law and constitutes an intrusion into private life. Our role is to provide accommodation, not to assess our guests' personal circumstances.

What documents are required at check-in?

On arrival, only a valid identity document (passport or national ID card) is requested, in accordance with Moroccan hotel registration regulations. No other document is required: in particular, no marriage certificate.

What Moroccan law says about marriage certificates at hotels

Morocco's Ministry of Justice has publicly stated that asking guests for a marriage certificate is not required by law and amounts to a violation of privacy. What a discreet check-in actually involves

Discretion is easier to judge from the detail than from a promise, so here is what the arrival formality consists of. You are asked for the name the booking was made under, for a valid identity document for each guest, and for a rough idea of what time you would like breakfast. That is the whole of it. Nobody asks how you know each other, how long you have been together, or why you are travelling as two. There is no box on a form for a marital status, no second desk you are sent to, and no pause while a document is turned over and studied in front of you.

The registration itself is handled by the owner or by the member of staff on duty, in the patio or in the small office beside it, rather than across a counter with other guests waiting behind you. Your identity document is used for the register and for your booking file, in the way the earlier part of this page describes, and is then handed back. Your situation is not a subject: not on arrival, not at breakfast, not on the morning you leave. Staff are used to welcoming couples, and a couple checking in is simply two guests checking in.

Privacy in a small house

A riad is built inward. The wall on the derb is plain, there is a single door, and everything that matters faces a patio that only guests see. That layout does a great deal of the work here. There is no large public lobby to cross, no lounge with a clear line of sight to a reception desk, and no bar where arrivals are watched by people already sitting down. You come through the door and within a few steps you are in a courtyard rather than in a thoroughfare.

Arriving in the medina as a couple: the first hour

The first hour in the medina is the part travellers picture least clearly, so it is worth setting out. Vehicles cannot reach the door: the lanes of the old town narrow well before the riad, and a taxi or a transfer stops at the nearest point a car can go. A member of staff meets you there. That is not a flourish, it is the practical answer to luggage and to a set of unmarked turnings, and it means you are not standing in the street with a suitcase while one of you works out which derb is which.

The walk in takes a few minutes and your bags are carried. The lane is plain and quiet, doors and walls and very little else, and then the door opens onto the patio and the temperature drops. From there it is mint tea if you want it, the room whenever you are ready, and no paperwork queue in between.
